If you’re at the beginning of a weightlifting program, the gym can certainly be an intimidating place. It can be embarrassing, for example, when the guy next to you can lift much more weight than you can. If you’re not careful, though, you can end up making some pretty big mistakes because of this.
Getting your feelings hurt is one thing. The problem can go way beyond that, however. If the beginner feels that he has to lift as much weight as a guy next to him, he is really asking for an injury. Competition is part of human nature, and it definitely exists in the gym. There’s nothing wrong with a little competition every now and then, but it is a really stupid idea to overdo it in the gym just to impress others.
Trying to impress those around you should not be your primary motivation in the gym. Obviously, you’re hoping to improve your physique and would like to show off your results. However, the time to do this is not in the gym. If you ignore your limitations and try to do too much in the gym, you can pay a hefty price and end up on the disabled list for many months. You should always strive to improve your performance, but take it slowly. Take it one step at a time and you’ll be less likely to end up with an injury.
