The main gist of this type of diet is to limit the intake of foods that are high in carbohydrates. This article will give you some things to think about and will help you make the decision as to whether this type of diet is for you.
A good place to start in our discussion of low-carbohydrate diets is to first understand what carbohydrates are. Carbohydrates are substances in our food that provide our bodies with energy and calories. There are two kinds of carbohydrates. They are simple and complex. Sugars make up the simple carbohydrates and starches and fiber make up the complex carbohydrates.
When you eat foods with carbohydrates in them, the foods are broken down into sugars known as glucose, and this is what makes your blood sugar go up. The insulin is secreted to help counteract the higher blood sugar and then the sugar is taken from the blood and is formed into fat. When this system doesnt work correctly, too much insulin may be produced in your body as it attempts to bring the sugar level down. If your insulin level is too high, you have the possibility of gaining weight. Eating a low-carb diet will help to keep your blood sugar at a normal rate.
What must be understood is that just because a low-carb diet will keep your blood sugar in check does not mean that you are eating fewer calories. Low-carb diets suggest the use of low-carb snacks. These snacks have alcohol sugars contained in them. A lot of calories are contained in these snacks and also may cause some uncomfortable side effects such as gas, cramping and bloating. You will find that low-carb diets are actually too low in carbohydrates causing you too feel drained of all your energy, and very tired.
You want to make sure that if you are going to follow a low-carb diet that it contains meats such as fish and poultry, lots of vegetables and lots of water. You do not want to follow a low-carb diet that contains a lot of red meat or cheeses. These can contain a lot of saturated fat, which is not good for your heart.
As you make a decision as to whether you are going to follow a low-carbohydrate diet, look at what your goal is. If your goal is to lose weight, this type of diet may not be your best option, as a low-carb diet should be followed if you are trying to stabilize your blood sugar. If you are trying to lose weight, you should look at some other options such as a calorie-switching plan.
